Branford Marsalis quotes
" A lot of musicians have a tough time hearing what we're doing in a trio format. "

Branford Marsalis
" Bonnie Raitt or Sheryl Crow-they do their thing and know what's going on but don't live or die on being in the moment. "

Branford Marsalis
" Coltrane came to New Orleans one day and he was talking about the jazz scene. And Coltrane mentions that the problem with jazz was that there were too few groups. "

Branford Marsalis
" Humans are imperfect. That's one of the reasons that classical and jazz are in trouble. We're on the quest for the perfect performance and every note has to be right. Man, every note is not right in life. "

Branford Marsalis
" I gave up my base in popular culture when I left the Tonight Show. "

Branford Marsalis
" I like to make records sound good. I'm more like a reducer than a producer. If an artist cannot produce themselves, what's the point? "

Branford Marsalis
" I never heard Trane say that A Love Supreme was his most spiritual record. We make up these things and they just perpetuate themselves. In order to play it, you have to have an understanding of many, many facets of black culture. "

Branford Marsalis
" I remember touring with Sting and he was talking about expanding his stuff: Listening to Bach, incorporating ideas. I said don't do that: it's a Pandora's box you can't close. You start doing that and it changes your music. "

Branford Marsalis
" I suspect that we might actually start selling some records with these artists in about 10 years. Some the people who invested, they're a little tight-because it's a lot of money to start up a company. "

Branford Marsalis
" I think that if you keep banging at the door all you need is a little foothold, a little tiny foothold, and then the rest will take care of itself. "

Branford Marsalis
" I think that is ultimately within the best interest of every artist - that they really believe in themselves and understand that sometimes you must go and play a club where you're not going to make no money and take a hit in order to enhance your profile among the people who frequent those places. "

Branford Marsalis
" I think that one of the problems that jazz has is that it's so incestuous that it's starting to kill itself. "

Branford Marsalis
" I used to check out Quincy Jones records. You listen to a Michael Jackson record that Quincy Jones produced, there'd be like 25 musicians on it, but every musician he used was perfect for the songs he used them for. I kind of have that instinct, but in jazz I don't think that really helps. "

Branford Marsalis
" I'm not going to play funk licks on a jazz album. That makes no sense. "

Branford Marsalis
" If I had to have a bunch of hoochie-mamas with kneepads doing dance routines while I took off my shirt, I really wouldn't dig it. "
